L/R clockwise: St Muredach's Cathedral Ballina, Revolutionary Padraig Pearse and his father's stone carving business in Dublin
Do you know about the Mayo connection for republican rebel Padraig Pearse?
His father James Pearse was a renowned and talented sculptor who created the ornate side alters in Ballina's St Muredach’s Cathedral.
James and his family lived above the stone carving business at 27 Great Brunswick (now Pearse) Street in Dublin city centre. Padraig Pearse and his younger brother Willie were court-martialled and executed by firing squad along with fourteen other leaders, for their part in the 1916 Easter Rising.
The Jackie Clarke Collection in Ballina has a vast array of material relating to Padraig Pearse including autographed letters, biographies, contemporaneous newspapers, commemorative literature, pamphlets etc.
The Jackie Clarke Collection is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am until 5pm and entrance is free.
