Over 280 organ transplants were carried out in Ireland in 2023.

The 282 transplants were carried out thanks to 95 deceased and 30 living organ donors, according to the Organ Donation Transplant Ireland Office.

Figures released by the HSE show that 91 kidney transplants were carried out this year, along with seven heart transplants, 24 lung transplants, 54 liver transplants, and six pancreas transplants.

"Organ donation is one of the most selfless gifts that a person can give," said Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly.

"This year 282 transplants were made possible through the altruism of donors and their families. As a result, other families had their loved ones here for another Christmas."

Minister Donnelly also encouraged people to "talk to loved ones about organ donation to make your intentions known".

"It's important for them to know your wishes."

"Thank you to all donors, families and our dedicated healthcare workers who made these transplants possible," he continued.
