Mayo libraries invite children to collect their free ‘My Little Library’ book bags

Special initiative aims to help children prepare for primary school while encouraging a love of reading
Children across Mayo who are preparing to start primary school this September are being encouraged to visit their local library and collect a free ‘My Little Library’ book bag packed with books and information to help them make the transition to big school.
The initiative is available through all 14 branch libraries in Mayo and is designed specifically for children starting school in 2026.
Each My Little Library Book Bag contains two specially selected storybooks covering themes such as starting school, making friends and managing emotions, as well as a My Little Library wallet for a child’s first library card and practical information for parents on supporting children through the transition to school.
The book bags are available in both Irish and English and can be collected free of charge from any Mayo library branch.
Library staff are encouraging families to use the opportunity to begin their library membership journey and discover the wide range of activities available throughout the year.
“Mayo libraries can’t wait to welcome all the four and five-year-old children into our libraries to collect their book bags and begin their library membership journey,” a spokesperson said.
The initiative aims not only to support children as they prepare for school but also to foster a lifelong love of reading and learning.
Mayo Libraries hope families will continue to visit regularly to borrow books, attend story times and take part in the many events and activities organised throughout the county.
Further information on library services, events and membership is available through Mayo Libraries’ social media channels or by visiting Mayo Library Service.
