Funding for a new community hub and biodiversity park hailed as a major boost for rural Mayo and local community life

Minister Alan Dillon has confirmed the allocation of €3.6 million in funding for the Islandeady Community Facilities Development, describing it as a transformative investment for the parish and a significant boost for rural Mayo.

The funding, allocated by the Department of Justice through the Immigrant Investor Programme, will support the development of a new community hub and biodiversity park in Islandeady.

Dillon said the project represents years of local effort and will provide long-awaited facilities to strengthen community life in the area.

“This is fantastic news for Islandeady and a major vote of confidence in the community,” he said.

“I have been glad to support and engage with the local committee throughout this process, and today’s allocation is a very positive step forward. This project has the potential to transform the heart of Islandeady and provide a modern, welcoming space for people of all ages.”

Plans for the Islandeady Community Facilities Development include sports and meeting facilities, learning spaces, a café, biodiversity areas, a natural play space, changing facilities, parking and accessible supports.

The development is expected to support community organisations, local events, education, wellbeing, biodiversity initiatives and sporting activity. It is also intended to help tackle rural isolation by offering residents a shared place to meet and remain socially connected.

Minister Dillon said the funding demonstrated what can be achieved when strong local ambition is backed by Government support.

“There has been a huge amount of work done by the Islandeady community to bring this project to this stage,” he said.

“I want to acknowledge Liam Keaveney, Caroline McLoughlin, the entire committee, local volunteers, fundraisers and everyone who has backed this vision. The level of community effort has been outstanding, and this allocation recognises that work.”

In addition to the Islandeady announcement, Minister Dillon also welcomed a separate €2 million allocation for Knockmore GAA Club, describing it as another important investment in community infrastructure across Mayo.

He said projects such as the Islandeady development and Knockmore GAA improvements are essential to strengthening rural communities, supporting young people and ensuring local areas have the facilities needed to thrive into the future.

Islandeady Development Company CLG will now move forward with the next stages of planning and delivery for the project.
