SACRED HEART WESTPORT secured their second Connacht Post-Primary Schools senior title in succession at a sun-splashed Swinford on Wednesday afternoon.
The Clew Bay students were clear and deserving winners of a game that never pushed the excitement button.
SHS Westport were excellent at the back with corner-back Eimear Geraghty leading the way with a top-drawer display.
Sacred Heart gave the Claregalway forwards little or no room in which to operate and it took 44 minutes for the maroon and navy to get their first score.
World and European boxing medallist Laura Moran led her side from centre-half-forward and the blues were 0-7 to 0-0 clear at the break with Sarah Mulroy powering forward from midfield time after time.
Only a fine save from Claregalway goalkeeper Leah O’Halloran prevented Aoife Staunton from putting Sacred Heart out of sight early in the second half, before Roisin Hughes eventually got the chasers off the mark at the end of the third quarter.
The Galway girls powered forward looking to get back into it, with Brenda Naughton to the fore, but they couldn’t breach a solid and powerful Westport back division before late points from Chloe Chambers and Saoirse Byrne left the Mayo girls out of reach.
