CHARLESTOWN were crowned Mayo LGFA Intermediate club football champions after a truly thrilling victory over Louisburgh at the Connacht GAA COE this afternoon.

Two second-half goals from player of the match Deirdre Doherty – who struck 2-6 – were what made the difference over a Louisburgh side that missed a chance to level the game right at the death.
The West Mayo side had the wind in their sails in the opening quarter when they hit 0-4 before Charlestown raised a flag.
Tara Needham took over the scoring duties from her injured sister Ciara, hitting three points in the first half alone.
Deirdre Doherty eventually got the East Mayo girls off the mark in the 18th minute before her side hit five points before half-time.
A great goal chance went astray when Katie Gavin sent a brilliant kick-pass into substitute Shona Mahon, who couldn’t keep her effort down but got a point for her troubles.
Mahon was denied once again before the short whistle when Louisburgh midfielder Aine O’Reilly stopped and held her shot on the line.
Charlestown began to motor in earnest when Louisburgh goalie Ruth Gibbons fouled in the square and got herself yellow-carded.
Deirdre Doherty beat Sarah O’Malley with the resultant penalty and raised another green flag in the 55th minute to send the women in green down the home straight.
There was heartbreak at the end for Louisburgh when Tara Needham’s last-gasp effort sailed inches wide of the goal, leaving Charlestown to prevail by the slimmest of margins.
