FOR the second year in a row the Mayo LGFA senior club championship title has gone to a team that has never won it before.
It was the last kick of the game that decided it, a free by Maria Cannon that crowned Burrishoole as county senior champions for the first time in their history as they pipped defending champions, Knockmore.
This was a low-scoring, defensive affair, but that is unlikely to worry a Burrishoole team that is managed by former Mayo footballer, Colm McManamon, this week.
The holders Knockmore were gallant but managed only one score from play in the entire game.
That was a late first-half goal from Clodagh Keane which made the difference for Colm Reape’s team for a long time. But not for long enough.
Dogged and persistent, Burrishoole kicked five of their six points in the second half of a game played out in dour wet conditions.
The closest the West Mayo side came to raising a green flag was when the impressive Rachel Baynes saw a shot stopped on the line by Knockmore defender Grace Naughton.
The champions could find no way past an airtight Burishoole defence, who only conceded a single score in the second half — a Shauna Howley free.
The game was still in the balance right up until the 67th minute when Ciara McManamon was fouled in a scorable position.
With nerves of steel, Maria Cannon stepped up to write Burrishoole’s name into the history books with the final kick of the game.
