Great night in store at Mayo GAA awards banquet

Mike Finnerty

THE festive season begins in earnest for many of the Mayo GAA community on Saturday night at the seventh annual Mayo News/O’Neills Club Stars Charity Banquet at Knockranny House Hotel, Westport.
Only a limited number of tickets for the Mayo GAA event of the year are still left as the prospect of another great night of wining, dining, prize-giving and live music have attracted big numbers from clubs all across the county.
All the proceeds from this year’s Club Stars, which is hosted in association with AIB, are being donated to Western Care services in Mayo.
The Mayo championship ‘Team of the Year’ will be announced on the night with the ‘Manager of the Year’ and ‘Players of the Year’ in the junior, intermediate and senior championships also being recognised.
Voting for the Senior Player of the Year has been taking place on mayonews.ie since last week with online readers casting their votes for one of Alan Dillon, Barry Moran and Cillian O’Connor. Voting will close on Friday at 1pm.
To order tickets or to make a donation to Western Care, call The Mayo News office now on (098) 25311.
The 30 players shortlisted for awards were selected by former Charlestown and Mayo footballer, John Casey, ex-Knockmore manager Eamonn Clarke, and Mayo News GAA writers Sean Rice and Austin Garvin. The quartet met last week to select the 15 players and five replacements that will make up the 2011 team. This selection will be announced on the night.
“We were very happy with the final selection,” admitted John Casey last night. “Of course some players will be disappointed, that’s only natural, but I still think that all the nominees should enjoy the experience of being shortlisted in the first place. Saturday night is all about the players, and they should enjoy every second.”
