Castlebar, Co Mayo
Noreen celebrated her 90th birthday earlier this year. She was the ninth of ten children born to Thomas and Nora Holland of Garrew, Aughagower. She had five brothers and four sisters and was the last surviving member of the family.
Like many of her generation, Noreen emigrated to the USA in her early twenties. She first went to California and later moved to Chicago. She was a regular visitor to Garrew to see her mother and family.
In the late 1960s, she met John Scanlon on one of those visits home. They were married in September, 1970. They lived in Furmoyle, Louisburgh, where Noreen was well known for her culinary skills and warm welcome to all visitors to their home, until John’s untimely passing in October, 1992.
Noreen later decided to move to Castlebar and lived happily and independently in her home for the next 20 years or so.
Eventually, the advancing years meant that she needed some help, initially at home and in the last year at the nursing home.
Noreen was known for many things. She retained fond memories of America and loved listening to all kinds of music and could play the piano accordion.
She enjoyed a good conversation, with family, friends, neighbours and even casual acquaintances, both in person and on the phone. She will be sadly missed by all her relatives, friends and neighbours.
May she rest in peace.
