Perry O’Reilly

Obituaries

Carrabawn, Westport, Co Mayo

Perry left us on July 26, 2022. In death, as in life, he caused zero fuss to those around him. Born and raised in Westport, Perry was a true Covey.
Perry had a vast and wide range of interests. He played guitar on many showbands, most notably ‘The Frielmen’ and shared his musical talents with everyone. Music was a real joy for Perry and right up to the end he had a very keen interest in music and a good ear for new musical talent.
Perry was crazy about sport. As was mentioned during his homily, it might be easier to list the sports that he didn’t play rather than the ones he did! At a minimum he played Gaelic football, soccer, table tennis, snooker, billiards, badminton, squash, darts, and golf. He excelled in all of them, especially golf. He was a very modest and humble man so he would not want us listing his golfing achievements here. Suffice to say that the golfing world has lost a very special talent.
Another one of Perry’s great interests was reading. He loved stories and acquiring knowledge. His ability to retain facts and remember events was incredible. Attaining knowledge was not something Perry did to feel superior. On the contrary, he took great pleasure in sharing anything he had learnt with others.
Perry’s wit was legendary. He always had a joke at hand and loved a good laugh. He especially loved making others laugh.
For the majority of Perry’s working life, he worked with Mayo County Council. He was a most affable colleague and public servant, always eager to help. He never brought his work home, instead he gave his family his full attention and love.
As a family we are devastated at the loss of this great man. We are also very grateful for the support that sympathisers have given to us during this very difficult time.
Perry was laid to rest at Aughaval Cemetery on Thursday, July 28. He is greatly missed by his wife Anne, sister Ruth, son Liam, daughters Vera, Karen and Dee, grandchildren Aideen, Ciaran, Dermot and Amy, son-in-law Danny, daughter-in-law Réka, nephews, nieces, and many friends.
Perry, rest in peace.
Perry’s Month’s Mind Mass will take place in St Mary’s Church, Westport on Sunday, August 28, 2022 at 10am.
