Bridget Tunney (née Gill)

Derrykillew, Liscarney, Westport, Co Mayo

Bridget was a native of Oughterard, Co Galway. Born February 1934 to Patrick and Mary Gill, she was the second of five children. Her mother passed when she was four years-old, Bridget and her siblings were raised by her father and grandfather (Dado). After finishing school, Bridget worked in Dublin for a brief period of time before moving back to Knappagh, just outside of Westport, to stay with her cousin. From there she took up employment in the Cosywear factory in Westport, where she made many friends. She joined the local camogie team and spent many happy hours training and enjoying the fun and from what we have been told, she was quite good.
She met her husband, Liam Tunney at a dance in Woodbrook Hall in Carrowkennedy and we believe it was love at first sight. They later married and went on to have three sons and five daughters. Bridget was a fantastic homemaker. She loved to bake, sew, knit and if you were looking for a bottle of Poteen, she would sort you out as quick as a wink. Bridget enjoyed long walks before it became trendy.
Bridget was predeceased by her husband Liam and grandson Damien. Bridget will be sadly missed by her sons Gino, Paddy and Liam, daughters Josephine, Theresa, Nora, Marian and Majella, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, great grandchildren, sister-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.
May she rest in peace.
