Maureen Murphy

Castletown, The Neale, Ballinrobe

Maureen passed away peacefully at her home on April 1, 2022. She was the nucleus of the family and her passing has created a deep void.
Maureen was born on May 23, 1929, to the late Thomas and Elizabeth O’Connor, Cahernagulm, The Neale. She was the eldest of four children. When she was 18 years of age she emigrated to New York where she spent four very happy years and would always recall the happy memories and friends she had there. When she returned home she married Jack Murphy on April 15, 1953 and set up home in Castletown. They reared a family of 11 which included three sets of twins. When she was 42 years of age Jack sadly passed away and Maureen was left to rear her large family with the youngest being just two years of age.
With little state support at the time, Maureen worked hard on the family farm with help from her older children along with being a wonderful mother and homemaker. She also served on the Board of Management of the Neale NS and Ballinrobe Vocational School and appreciated the value of education and the difference it could make in peoples lives.
Maureen had a deep faith and always had time for prayer, the rosary and Mass. Over the years she visited Lourdes and never missed an opportunity to go to Knock Shrine. Maureen loved her family dearly and loved to visit them be it in the USA, UK or different parts of Ireland where they had set up home. She had a great interest in the lives of her 29 grandchildren and her great-grandchildren and loved to hear of their life achievements and travels etc.
Maureen was cared for at her home right up to her passing, which we are truly grateful for. One of the recurring comments that was made in the messages of condolence was “she was a true lady”. She has left a beautiful legacy which we will cherish forever.
Maureen was predeceased by her husband Jack, her sisters Lena and Kathleen, brother Paddy Joe, son-in-law Seán Armstrong. She is survived by her daughters Eileen Cawley (Islandeady), Collette Walsh (Corrrandulla), Annette Armstrong (Barna), sons Gerard (Shrule), Joseph (Ballinrobe), Padraic and Seán (Galway), Martin, Christopher and Jarlath (Castletown), Brendan (UK), sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, 29 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends. May her gentle soul rest in peace.
