Austin (Austie) Gannon

Carramacloughlin, Murrisk, Westport, Co Mayo

The death took place of Austin on October 6, 2021.
Austie was born on Christmas Eve 1927 to John and Mary (née O’Brien) Gannon, the third of nine children. He was predeceased by his wife Ann (née Fergus), (Cuilleen), sisters Mollie (Dublin), Margaret (Chicago), Katie (Carramacloughlin) and brothers James (Chicago), John (Northampton, England and Dublin) and Willie (Swindon, England).
Austie grew up and spent all his life in Carramacloughlin, surrounded by the beautiful scenery of Clew Bay and being at the foot of Croagh Patrick, working with cattle and sheep.
He had a great knowledge and experience of the mountain and often spoke about the times he would be involved in searches for missing climbers. When nephews and nieces came from England and the USA as children to stay with him, he would gladly share his way of life with them, whether it was milking cows, rounding up sheep on ’The Reek’, or any other farm work.
Austie was blessed with 32 years of marriage to Ann, enjoying each others company and having a wide circle of neighbours and friends. He loved having visitors to the house, catching up on the latest news and on what was happening locally. Austie never needed email or any form of modern communications or social media to make conversation or chat.
He would sit in his chair beside the range talking about the issues of the day and with his great memory, events of old, such as digging sheep out of the snow in 1947 and who lived in which houses in the village more than 70 years ago.
Austie loved his holidays in Chicago and always appreciated how well he was welcomed and looked after there by his sisters, nephews and nieces.
When Ann died in 2010, Austie had to adapt to a single life once again, but his great neighbours and friends supported him and kept him company. In his final years, Austie was cared for and looked after by wonderful people around him, in particular by John Fitzpatrick and Patricia Foy. This meant that Austie was able to live a fulfilled life at home to the very end.
God bless you Austie. Rest in peace with Ann and thank you from everyone whose lives you touched.
Austie is survived by his sister Delia (Chicago), brother Paddy (London) and nieces and nephews in the UK and USA.
