Joe McNally

Obituaries

South Mall and King’s Hill, Westport, Co Mayo

Joe McNally was born to Eileen and Martin McNally in Thurles, Co Tipperary, on June 1, 1966.
The only boy in a family of five, he and his sisters spent some of the happiest summers of their lives on the Darmody family farm in Moher, Upperchurch, Co Tipperary over the years, but Joe was always a Westport man.
Joe was bright, warm, and funny with an appreciation for great music and the most incredible collection of CDs and records. Joe spent nights at the disco growing up and was an avid concert-goer all his life, whether he was living in Ireland or abroad. He was set to study computers in Athlone after his Leaving Cert in 1986, but for a chance visit to London that year that changed his course. He stayed in the UK until moving to San Francisco in 1989 where he met and married Jennifer Allan. They lived in California in the States for many years before Joe moved home to Westport – via San Diego and the Cayman Islands – in 2001.
As a barman, he met many people around the town and all who knew him or worked with him over the years since his return to Mayo – in MCC, in Westport United FC, in Allergan and beyond – speak of his great smile, of what a gentleman he was, and of his unflappable nature, ‘Sound’ being his response of choice to absolutely every situation.
His friends remember him as a wonderful, witty man, fun-loving and caring. He loved to travel and was a loyal Liverpool FC supporter, travelling to Anfield for football matches and even winning a trip to the World Cup in Japan in 2002. He died on April 10, 2021 and is greatly missed by his family and friends all over the world, most especially his father Marty; sisters Mary, Breda and Veronica; nieces Síne and Emily and nephew Mark.
We remember also his beloved mother Eileen, sister Helena and all the extended McNally and Darmody families that went before him. May they guide Joe home to Heaven and may his gentle soul rest in peace – go raibh suaimhneas síoraí air.
