Gabriel Derrig


Cappaduff, Tourmakeady

On Thursday, November 19, 2020 the death took place at her home of Mrs Gabriel Derrig following an illness in her 79th year. Formerly Gabriel Gibbons, Newport, emigrated to Chicago, USA, having worked there for a number of years, she met the love of her life, Tourmakeady man Seán Derrig. They married there, started their family and returned to Tourmakeady to help out on the farm and in the local shop. Gabriel was a popular member of the community known to many folk being in the shop and helping out with the staff of Chotala Gaeltarra Tourmakeady also having a B&B. On Saturday, November 21, 2020, Gabriel’s remains were removed from her home and brought on a short trip to St Mary’s Church, Tourmakeady for Mass celebrated by Fr John Kenny PP; Losita Stack, niece of Seán Derrig; Yvonne and Brendan, daughter and son of Gabriel, did the readings; prayers were presented by Julie Lally and Delia Rice, family friends; Tourmakeady GAA held a guard of honour according to Covid-19 rules in respect to the Derrig family who were loyal supporters of Tourmakeady GAA both at home and in Chicago. Gabriel was laid to rest in Tourmakeady Cemetery following the Mass. Gabriel is survived by her husband Seán, sons Seán, Danny, Tommy Joe, Michael, Kevin and Brendan, daughters Yvonne and Cathriona, son-in-law Devon, daughters-in-law Patty, Anne, Ann, Maggie, Tara and Stephanie, 21 grandchildren, brothers Martin, Tony and Tommy, sisters Patricia and Finola, nieces, nephews, relations, friends and neighbours. May Gabriel’s soul rest in peace.
