Michael O’Boyle

Tonragee East, Achill, Westport, Co Mayo

Michael O’Boyle aged 80 years passed away peacefully surrounded by his family following a short illness in St Fionnan’s Community Nursing Unit, Achill Sound on August 7, 2020. He was born on September 18, 1939 to the late Thomas and Alice O’Boyle, Cloughmore, Achill, and had one older sister the late Maureen Gallagher. Michael moved to London on leaving school to begin his working life as a Steel Fixer in construction work. He mainly worked in the UK but also worked in Ireland over the years. Michael often spoke of working on oil rigs off Aberdeen in Scotland and on the Thames Barrier in London. When he returned home from England on holidays Michael would always visit his relatives, neighbours and friends in Tonragee and Cloughmore and go to the pier where he would admire the fishing boats. Michael was a great swimmer and loved being by the sea. It was while at home on holidays from London Michael met and fell for Marietta O’Malley from Tonragee and they married in 1967 and had three children Aidan, Denise and Raymond. Michael was a devoted father and husband and worked hard to provide for his family. At age 65 Michael retired home to Tonragee and kept himself busy by going to the bog and doing outdoor work. He took up cycling and went on his bike every day. Michael was a very calm and content man who went to Mass every Sunday. He appreciated nature and listening to traditional music and always had his radio on in the background with trad music. He was a wonderful Grandfather and had a special way with children and he adored his four grandchildren Clara, Liam, Laoise and Niamh. As Michael’s funeral cortege left from his home in Tonragee to Dereens Church, Achill the sky was blue and the sun shone over the beautiful views of the Currane Peninsula and Achill which he loved dearly. As he made his way on his final journey to the church and to Polranny Cemetery his many neighbours and friends in Tonragee, Achill Sound, Dereens and Cloughmore stood along the roadside as a wonderful mark of respect. Michael will be greatly missed by his wife Marietta and family Aidan, Denise and Raymond, son-in-law Brendan Gannon, daughter-in-law Pamela Caine O’Boyle and his four grandchildren. He will also be sadly missed by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Eileen and Kevin Collins, brother-in-law Tom O’Malley, his nephews and nieces Michael, Tommy, Mary and Alice Gallagher and all his extended family and friends. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
