Knocknabola, Kilmeena, Westport
Michael Hastings was born to Thomas and Kathleen Hastings of Drummindoo, Westport on September 30, 1943 where his early life was spent helping out on the family farm. Having completed his education in the Christian Brothers’ School, Castlebar Street, Westport, Michael spent some time working in the Old Railway Hotel and as a milkman. Following this, his work-life was to lead him into the construction industry with some local building firms, becoming a skilled plasterer and builder. In the early 1960s, Michael travelled to London where he also worked in construction for a few years. On returning to Westport he met and fell in love with his future wife Mary (née Murphy). Married life with four children on the family farm in Knocknabola was to follow, where Michael was to continue his lifelong interest in farming. He enjoyed the outdoor life and spent many long days working on the farm. As time passed by and his grandchildren came along, they were to give Michael so much happiness and joy, whether it was blackberry picking or attending to his flower beds. James and Holly ensured Michael always went home with a smile on his face. Michael also enjoyed walking. especially in later life, which involved meeting his neighbours and friends for discussions on farming matters of the day or to be invited in for a cup of tea. Sadly, six years ago Michael became ill and started a long journey which would see him make many trips to hospital. Despite this, He faced his illness with courage and dignity and a never-ending optimistic attitude. Michael’s final three months were spent at home being cared for by his family, which was the place he loved most to be. Michael passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family.
Michael was predeceased by his brother Paddy and sister Nell. Michael will be sadly missed and forever remembered by his loving wife Mary, sons James (Westport), Declan (Kilmeena), Peter (Australia), daughter Cathy Tucci (New York), brothers Peter (Westport), Frank (Sheeaune, Westport), John (Bonniconlon), sisters Jane (Kilmeena), Kathleen (Drummin), Maureen (Offaly), son-in-law Joe Tucci, daughters-in-law Edel and Teresa, grandchildren James, Holly, Meghan, Rina, Michael and Ciara, brother-in-law Bernard Murphy, nieces and nephews and many other relatives, neighbours and friends.
