Myna, Kilmeena and Toronto, Canada
The death took place on May 22, 2020, of Micheál (Mick) Geraghty, late of Myna, Kilmeena, Westport, and Toronto, Canada. Mick, who was son of the late Peter and Mary Geraghty Myna, was 79 years of age, and passed away following a short illness, an illness Mick faced with great positivity and spirit throughout, even during the most difficult periods.
He was husband of Josephine (née Willis, Watford), and much loved father of Kieran (Cortes Island, BC, Canada) and Brendan (Nelson, BC), grandad to Sidney Gamble, Mari Róisín, Frae, Lu & Dov. Brother to Seán (Myna) and Bea Moran (Rosscahill, Kilmeena), Sr Margaret (Luton), Eileen and Chris (London),
Mick was predeceased by his brothers Josie and Brendan and his sister Teresa. Mick had many nieces and nephews in Ireland, England the US and Canada.
Growing up, Mick helped his mother and siblings on the family farm. Mick’s father had passed away when he was a young boy. Like many others,
Mick emigrated as a young man, first to England, and then with Jo, to Canada in 1968. He had worked in construction, and later as a machinist. Mick and Jo were popular in the Mayo and Irish societies in Toronto and apart from waltzing, Mick loved to sing, the Isle of Inishfree often got a rendition.
Mick never lost touch with home and returned often with Jo to holiday and attend family weddings, etc. Another passion was Mayo GAA, and Mick followed the county team each year with gusto.
Over the years Mick volunteered with several organisations including, The Red Cross, YWCA, Rose of Durham (Teen parent support) and Durham Deaf Services.
Mick was a much loved and devoted family man and will be dearly missed by his wife Jo, his sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren and a wide circle of family and friends.
A celebration of Mick’s life, and a good jam session, will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers or masses, please consider a donation in his memory to Durham Deaf Services, 900 King St East, Oshawa, Canada, or to Mesothelioma Cancer research.
