Shramore, Newport, Co Mayo and Luton, England
Mick was born in Lettra, Ballycroy to Michael and Bridget (née Mc Intyre). His dad died suddenly when he was 5 years old so was reared in Shramore with his Granny where he lived the rest of his life. He still remained faithful to Ballycroy visiting his mother and siblings and attending the dances where he meet his beloved wife Katie Grealis. They married in Ramsey, England but returned home where they brought up their 5 children. He started working in the nearby forestry which had just opened and he remained there until his retirement. After he retired, he and his beloved wife Katie spent their time visiting family and friends at home and abroad, going to every game of bingo - sometimes two in a day, and visiting Knock once a week, showing the deep religious faith they both had.
In the latter years, they spent time in Luton with their daughter and family. Mick made great friends, enjoying a very busy social life attending bingo, dinner dances and outings. Midwest Radio was also a regular and constant factor as was The Mayo News and The Parish Newsletter keeping him up to date with all that was happening at home.
He was a quiet man, honest, hardworking, intelligent and quick witted and will be remembered as a true gentleman....a description so many people used at his funeral. The high esteem in which Mick was held was reflected at his funeral where large crowds gathered to pay their respects in Newport and Luton. It was a great comfort to hear the kind words and memories shared. His funeral Mass was a celebration of his life, with tokens reflecting his life brought to the alter and prayers and readings said by his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a man you would be proud to call your Dad, husband and family member.
Mick was predeceased by his loving wife Katie, 4 years ago on October 22, his brothers Tommie, John, Patrick and sister Bridget.
Mick will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his son Michael (Bangor), daughters Maureen( Newport), Breda (Offaly), Martina and Christina (Luton), sons-in-law Padraic, John, Peter, Robert, daughter-in-law Kathleen, grandchildren Caroline, Damien, Patrick, Alma, Ryan, Clara, John, Kate, Amanda, Mellissa, Aishling, Carmen, Orlaith and Shane, great-grandchildren Grace, Caoimhe, Sonny, Tiernan, Trinity, Summer, Joey, Conor, Lily and Sophia, sisters Mary (Lettra, Ballycroy), Kathleen (Weston-super-Mare), sister-in-law Nora (Ballycroy), his nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and neighbours.
