Bernie Walsh

Carrabawn and late of Mill Street Westport

The people of Westport and in particular her family and friends were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Bernie Walsh, a well-known member of the Westport Community on Friday, May 31, 2019.
Bernie was born in Croy, Westport to Dan and Mary Ellen Conway and sister of Nuala, Michael, Tommie (RIP), Mel (RIP) and Ger. On finishing school, she started her working life in James O’Connell’s Wholesalers on Mill Street. It was in O’Connell’s that she met Teddy for the first time and the couple married a few years later in a double wedding ceremony with her sister Nuala and her husband Bertie.
Teddy and Bernie were very happily married for over 49 years. Following their wedding, they moved into the pub on Mill Street where Bernie quickly learned to pull a pint, tap a barrel and clear the pub at the end of the night. Bernie was a family woman at heart and had four children, Stephanie, Elaine, Ted and Dónal. Bernie dedicated herself to the task of raising her children and took great pride in their achievements. Bernie was a very caring person who looked after her family, her friends and customers, always offering practical advice and support to anyone who needed it.
Following their retirement to Carrabawn; Teddy and Bernie developed two new hobbies, one was a love of sun holidays, frequently visiting Spain and the Canary Islands and the other enjoying the company of their seven grandchildren. Bernie’s first grandchild Ava predeceased her in 2005. Bernie very much enjoyed her daily walk and many people commented that their abiding memory of Bernie will be of her out walking the roads and beaches of Westport. Bernie also enjoyed reading the newspaper daily, doing a bit of shopping and keeping up with her TV programmes. The last few months presented Bernie with many challenges, but ones she faced with great courage, dignity, humour and determination, never losing her willingness to look after others and always putting everyone ahead of herself.
May Bernie’s gentle soul rest in peace. Bernie will be sadly missed by her loving husband Teddy, twin daughters Stephanie and Elaine, sons Ted and Donal. Sons-in-law Conor, Jason and Mark, Ted’s partner Olive, grandchildren Sadhbh, Dan, Rory, Ted, Hugh and Grace; sister Nuala Corbet and brothers Michael and Ger alongside a wide circle of family and friends.
