Thomas Gibbons

Cregganroe, Kilsallagh, Westport

The death has taken place of Thomas Gibbons on Friday, March 8, 2019 peacefully at Galway University Hospital following a brief illness. He was a loving husband, wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Thomas was born in Cregganroe, the youngest of five in family to parents Ellie Navin and Myles Gibbons, where he lived all his life. He met Nancy (née Burke) and married in 1957 and they were blessed with a family of 11 children – John, James, Patrick, Michael, Mary, Evelyn, Ann, Nora, Thomas, Martin and Claire. Sadly daughter Evelyn passed away in August 1972 aged just eight-and-a-half years.
Hard work was a way of life for Thomas working the family farm from a young age and spent time with the Land Commission and Council. Thomas was well known for his turf cutting to help raise his family. He enjoyed a social drink and a sing-song.
Thomas will be sadly missed by all, especially his loving wife Nancy and family, 26 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins, neighbours and a large circle of friends.
May his soul rest in peace.
