James O’Callaghan (Jim)

Partry, Co Mayo

Retired Garda Sergeant James O’Callaghan (Jim), Partry, passed away at his home on June 19th, 2018. James came to Mayo in 1953 and he later met and married Frances Walsh, Manulla in 1958.
James was stationed in Castlebar, Balla, Tourmakeady and Partry where he made lifelong friends in each place before retiring in 1984. His working life was marked by a dedication to the law but more importantly, by a sense of compassion, fairness and justice. His approach was always to use common sense and give people a chance.
The GAA played a huge part in his life. He followed the fortunes of his native Kerry with great passion, but in recent years he was also known to support Mayo – unless they were playing Kerry!  When stationed in Tourmakeady, he became one of the original members of the club. He invested his time, energy and experience into training underage players who still remember his enthusiasm and genuine interest in their development as people. Many years later, he was thrilled to be named Honorary Club President.
