Rt Rev Monsignor Michael Tobin

The death of Monsignor Michael Tobin, retired Parish Priest of Mountbellew, Moylough took place on September 20, 2007.
A native of Newport, he was son of the late Brigid Tobin, Newport and the late Michael Tobin, Dublin.
Ordained on June 20, 1948, he spent his priestly life as CC in Cill Chiarnáin, Carna (1948-1958), CC Westport, Catechetical advisor (1958-1968), teacher of religion, Vocational School, Castlebar, Chaplin to Franciscan Monastery, Errew, and Assistant in Castlebar Parish (1968-1978), CC Mountbellew (1978-1982), and PP Mountbellew/Moylough (1982-1998). He was appointed Canon of the Cathedral Chapter (1993), appointed Chaplain to his Holiness (December 1995), and retired in 1998.
Msgr Tobin will be remembered by many as the ‘Catechism examiner’ who came to the primary schools to examine the children in their catechism. Nervous and afraid at first, children soon realised that he was a very gentle and kind priest, with a lovely smile, putting them all at ease and even helping with the odd answer.
The concelebrated Mass for Monsignor Tobin took place in St Mary’s Church, Mountbellew, on September 22 with burial afterwards in the church grounds.
Msgr Tobin is survived by his sisters Margaret Kealy, Newport and Lil Tobin, Mountbellew, nieces, nephews and sisters-in-law.
