Renee Patience, founder and head trainer at Paws Academy in Ballycroy and Westport, has been named the national Dog Trainer of the Year 2025 at the Local Pet Awards. The awards ceremony took place in Dublin on Saturday, November 15, and was decided entirely by public nomination and vote, reflecting strong community support and recognition for her work.

With more than 30 years of experience, Renee is a qualified behaviourist who specialises in positive, reward-based dog training. Her career includes global media features, published work as the author of the best-selling Pawsitive range of books, and competitive success in UK agility at prestigious national events. She has also showcased heelwork to music, obedience and the Kennel Club Good Citizen test at Crufts & Discover Dogs in the UK.

Speaking about the award, Renee said: “I am incredibly grateful to everyone who supported and voted for me. Winning this means so much because I absolutely love working with dogs and their owners, and I feel very proud of what we achieve together. I am also very grateful to live and work in Mayo, where the community has been so welcoming and supportive. Even when people cannot reach us in person, we offer virtual coaching and work with clients all over the world. Helping dogs and their families build happier, calmer lives is something I am truly passionate about.”

Paws Academy provides behaviour support, puppy training, agility and tailored coaching that focuses on ethical, science based and reward-based methods. The business supports clients across Mayo and beyond, offering both in person and virtual training.
