Mayo councillors reject "meaningless" budget at meeting and call for ministerial review

Calls for review as Westport-Belmullet councillors dismiss unchanged municipal budget

Councillors reject "meaningless" budget meeting and call for ministerial review

Councillors from the Westport/Belmullet Municipal District.

Councillors from the Westport-Belmullet Municipal District have once again rejected the draft budget at the annual budget meeting, describing the process as "meaningless".

The financial matter before members was the General Municipal Allocation (GMA) of €490,000, unchanged from the previous year and distributed equally among councillors at approximately €70,000 each.

The meeting which took place online this morning, was a statutory requirement under the Local Government Financial and Audit Procedures Amendment Regulations 2015.

Cllr Peter Flynn described the process as "a complete waste of everyone's time", adding that councillors have repeatedly raised concerns about the lack of financial detail provided at these meetings.

Members agreed to formally reject the draft budget, mirroring their position in previous years. It was further agreed that Cllr Flynn would write to both the junior and senior Minister for Local Government, John Cummins and James Browne, requesting that the current process be reviewed or abolished.

The motion to reject the draft budget was carried unanimously by all councillors present.
