A Mayo Super League soccer club has been awarded a significant funding boost after they were selected as one of the winners in the Texaco Support for Sport initiative.
The oil company, who run service stations across the country, are in the fifth year of the programme, which aims to assist the vibrant Irish sporting culture with exciting ventures.
A total of €130,000 has been given nationwide. Previous winners in the county were Ballina Boxing Club (2024), Lake District Athletic Club in Ballinrobe (2023), Ballina Tennis Club (2022), and Tourmakeady Handball Club (2021).
Westport United are one of the clubs to benefit from the initiative and have received €5,000 from Texaco.
The four-figure sum was presented to the club to help extend the clubhouse and new standalone changing rooms.
Former Ireland rugby international Donncha O'Callaghan was part of the judging process, and he moved to congratulate the Clew Bay club on their win.
"I’m delighted that the Texaco award will help to provide changing rooms to cater for its increasing female membership and am looking forward to seeing the next ‘Girls In Green’ from Westport United in the future,” he stated.
