Hundreds of people gathered at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Cushlough Westport last night for the safe release and return of Mayo woman Gena Heraty following the news of her kidnapping in Haiti along with seven other people.

One of the organisers, Lenny Grimes, describes Gena as a ‘living saint’ and said everyone in the community is ‘shocked.’

Whereas, there would normally be about ten mass goers on a Monday evening, ‘hundreds of people’ came last night to show their support and to pray for Gena.

As the photo above shows, the crowd was so large that many had to stand outside for the service.

Lenny explains that it was decided not to have music at the Mass as “the Mass was about Gena and not about music.”

The silence, particularly during the communion, spoke more than music could and symbolised the community’s deep connection and respect for Gena.

The community are rallying around the family with prayer, and there will be a rosary said for Gena tonight in Cushlough at 7 pm.
