The Association says it hopes to see more people picking up a racket this year, whether returning to the sport or giving it a go for the first time, and promises a warm welcome in clubs across Mayo.
Badminton in Mayo is set for an exciting season ahead, with new opportunities for players of all ages and levels. The Mayo Badminton Association held its Annual General Meeting on September 30 at Crimlin Community Centre, with a good attendance and plenty of constructive discussion about the season ahead.
Anthony Walsh of Ballina B.C. was elected Chairperson, with Liam Murphy (Crimlin B.C.) appointed Secretary, Michael Kearney (Ballina B.C.) continuing as Treasurer, and Antoinette Crowley (Castlebar B.C.) taking on the role of Juvenile Co-ordinator.
This year will see the return of the Mayo Adult Closed Championship, along with the Men’s H, Ladies H and Mixed (Grade G/F) Leagues, offering plenty of competitive action for club players. Younger players will also have their chance to shine in the Mayo Juvenile Closed Championship and the Ballina Singles Competition, with regular county training sessions planned throughout the season.
To support the growing interest in the sport, a new website has been launched at www.mayobadminton.ie. As well as a Club Finder tool to help newcomers locate their nearest club, the site also features the history of the Association, league tables, news updates and useful resources for players and clubs.
The Association is also inviting the public to help choose its new logo. This is the first time Mayo Badminton has asked the wider community to take part in such a decision, and the Association hopes as many people as possible will get involved. Voting is now open through the website and will remain live until October 17, giving players, supporters and anyone with an interest in sport in the county the chance to have their say on the Association’s new identity.
