MAYO footballers played central roles as Vancouver Éire Óg won the city's intermediate football final at the weekend. The thrilling final was one of the last games in the world to be played under the 'old-rules' and Éire ÓG edged out St Finnians by a single point on a 0-11 to 0-10.
The winning team had a heavy-Mayo influence with Paddy Costello (Belmullet), Sean Conlon (Castlebar), JP McLoughlin (Swinford), Sean Walsh (Kiltimagh), and Cathal Carney and John Cunnane (Ballyhaunis) helping their adopted club capture the crown.
Éire ÓG has players from every corner of Ireland and there has been a heavy Mayo involvement since its foundation in 2018.
JP McLoughlin coaches the club and manages the senior team who fell short in the championship semi-final by a point after extra time. Claremorris sharp-shooter Mikey Higgins was leading scorer for the senior team with 2-15 in the championship in addition to being leading scorer in the league with a huge return of 6-15.
"Vancouver is a great city and we have a lot of Irish people coming here all the time. Anyone who's looking to play football and be part of a great club should follow Vancouver Éire Óg on Instagram and reach out to us there. They won't regret it," McLoughlin told The Mayo News.
