Mayo star hungry for silverware as Breaffy determined to bring special trophy home

Breaffy's Davitt Neary will be eager for his side to claim the David Gavin trophy

As the Division One League Final is set for this weekend, who will lift the David Gavin Cup?

Speaking to Mayo GAA ahead of the final, Breaffy’s Davitt Neary and co are raring to go. Neary explained how important it would be to claim silverware “ It’s been a while since we won it (2017), there’s not a lot of silverware brought back to us since but this trophy will be special if we can bring it back to Breaffy especially with the cup being named after a former player”.

After his breakthrough season with Mayo, the Breaffy attacker said “it’s good to be back playing with the club, a few of the Mayo lads were away but now and ready as ever, we’re back training together for a few weeks. There's a lot of new players and youngsters coming up and I feel the management have prepared us very well for this upcoming game with Crossmolina”.

After topping their respective divisions, Breaffy and Crossmolina Deel Rovers will face off this Saturday (July 19) in Hastings Insurance MacHale Park at 6.45pm. Brian Benson’s side claimed the division two title last season but since then, they have gone on to claim County, Provincial and All-Ireland success. Sean Deane has enjoyed a great recent spell with Breaffy as they impressed throughout the league campaign. With players such as Aidan O’Shea, Davitt Neary, Matthew Ruane, Jordan Flynn, Conor Loftus and Kobe Mc Donald on show, a close game can be expected.

David Gavin played for Breaffy for many years as well as representing Mayo at both Minor and U-21 level lost his life in a tragic accident in 2016 when the popular man was swimming in Canada. It would be a fitting touch if his native club can claim the cup named in his honour. However Crossmolina Deel Rovers will have other ideas. Expect a ding-dong battle.
