Team manager John Coyle (centre) and coaches Brian Regan and Clodagh McManamon wore smiles after Sunday's victory
Sacred Heart team manager John Coyle has been a stalwart in the Westport school's footballing success in recent year, however, his biggest triumph may be yet to come.
Speaking to The Mayo News following Sunday's All Ireland semi-final victory Coyle said; “It just feels great to get through again after last years’ disappointment, it’s lovely to get another shot at it again. I just thought the girls left everything out there on the pitch and in fairness, Maynooth put up a huge battle, but we got over them in the end.”
Coyle was quick to acknowledge the significance of the Maynooth wing-forward receiving a red card early in the first half.
He said “The red card was huge. I know it was just a moment of madness from the Maynooth girl, but they were so tired near the end. They had to work so much harder, and we were able to have that extra player all over the pitch. We had an extra girl to help out with their number 14, who was fantastic.”
When asked about the success of the school in recent years, Coyle paid homage to the club scene, saying he would 'love to take all the credit for it, but the clubs do so much work'.
"You have Burrishoole, Westport, Kilmeena and Carnacon. We’re just so blessed to have four good clubs around us.
“They send us in some very good girls without us having to do any work! Our main job is to gel them together. The girls get on so well together anyway that they don’t need much work or motivation, they’re great.”
Coyle did give himself a minute to dream about lifting the prestigious Senior A trophy.
“It’d be class. I’d love it for the girls, themselves primarily, but it’d mean great things. It would help all the clubs around, they’d get the buzz off of it. For the county as well. These girls are playing at a really high level. If they are playing teams from other counties within these schools, that will help them develop as county players in years to come,” he concluded.
Details for the final fixture have yet to be announced.
