It has been confirmed that Mayo soccer star John Mountney has signed with Northern Ireland Football League side Glenavon.

Mountney, who hails from Bohola, joins the Armagh-based side on a permanent basis following the conclusion of his time with Bohemians.

The 32-year-old midfielder has enjoyed a long career in the League of Ireland, with an overflowing trophy cabinet from the halcyon days at Dundalk, as well as lifting the FAI Cup with Saint Pat's in 2021.

The seasoned campaigner will be hoping to add that element of winning know-how to Michael O'Connor's side, who are enduring a tricky season thus far.

At present, the Mourneview Park men prop up the NIFL table, with some nine points between themselves and second from bottom Carrick Rangers. Should they finish rock-bottom, they will face a relegation play-off.

O'Connor spoke glowingly of his new recruit from the West when welcoming him to the Lurgan Blues.

“Every club needs born winners and experienced heads to help guide the younger players. That’s exactly what John brings," he stated.

"He’s had a long and successful career in the League of Ireland, winning lots of medals along the way, so definitely well placed to help us.”

“We have a great group of lads here, but they’re generally quite young, and some of them are very inexperienced, so it’s good to have the likes of John about the club.

"I know he’ll come straight in and be a ‘senior pro’ and be a leader on the pitch and in the dressing room.”

Glenavon's fans will potentially be able to see Mountney in action as early as tonight (Friday, January 23). His new side head to Derry to take on second-placed Coleraine at 7.45 pm.
