MAYO exited the competition on Sunday evening following a disappointing defeat to a much-superior Galway side in Eamonn Deacy Park.
The home side took a deserved lead on 25 minutes when a corner caused confusion in the Mayo box and former Galway United man, Enda Curran, reacted quickest to touch the ball home. Mayo created occasional opportunities through Jordan Loftus, PJ Gilmartin, Luke Kelly and Connor McCarthy, but they rarely carried a sustained threat, not getting the time on the ball that they would in the Mayo League.
The second half underlined Galway’s superiority. Colm Whelan should have been closed down before delivering a low cross on 76 minutes that substitute Donnacha McNamara steered into the net. Galway’s physical edge and movement caused problems all evening, with Tom Kidd dictating midfield and Cahill Coyne marshalling the back line. Callum Brown also impressed with his attacking runs from full back.
Mayo’s positives were limited, though Conal Doran looked composed in goal and Loftus worked tirelessly before injury curtailed his involvement. Galway now lead the Connacht section with maximum points and require only a draw against Sligo Leitrim in the last round to reach the knockouts.
A full match report and reaction will be carried in Tuesday's Mayo News.
