MAYO FC have formally expressed interest in playing in a third League of Ireland division at adult level.
By August 2026, the FAI aims to establish a third tier comprised of 20 teams divided into a northern and southern division.
The teams will play against other teams in their respective divisions first to qualify for playoffs. From there, the top teams from North and South will compete for a chance to be promoted to the League of Ireland Men’s First Division.
In a statement on social media, Mayo FC described their application as an ‘historic step forward in our club’s development’.
Speaking on Midwest Radio over the weekend, Mayo FC Chairman Joe Faughnan said that fielding at adult level was ‘a natural progression’ for the club.
Formed in 2023, Mayo FC currently fields five teams; U-14, U-15 and U-17 boys teams and U-17 and U-19 women’s teams. The club aims to eventually field male and female teams at every underage grade and at adult level.
Faughnan said that Mayo FC would have to improve their facilities per League of Ireland requirements but said the club was ‘not that far away when you see some of the other clubs’.
The Mayo Football League has received €406,497 of funding for upgrades at Umbro Park in Milebush, where Mayo FC currently play their home games. This will include the installation of floodlights on the main grass pitch.
