Mayo finally announced their arrival in The Oscar Traynor Cup, with a superb 4-2 win over a strong Donegal side in windy and wet conditions at Swilly Park.
Two goals from Ben Edeh and one apiece from Kevin Kitterick and Oran Groarke secure a home semi-final for the Mayo men, where they will face Limerick on March 23.
Assisted by the wind and rain, Donegal laid siege on the Mayo goal from the outset and for ten minutes battered the visitors with their robust style and neat set-pieces. They forced four corners in that period and it took Mayo a while to look them in the eye and settle in. But once Mayo got the measure of them, they absorbed Donegal’s relentless first-half pressure and rarely looked like conceding.
Edeh opened the scoring two minutes into first-half stoppage time when he finished well after excellent work by Kevin Kitterick on the wing. The goal came after a good ten minutes for Mayo.
Mayo were denied a penalty immediately after the break and John Robb levelled seconds later.
Man-of-the-match, Groarke, made it 2-1 and Kitterick made it 3-1 before Eddie O’Reilly got one back. Edeh sealed it for Mayo five minutes into stoppage time.
