TWO of the oldest clubs in Mayo will clash swords in Ireland’s premier junior soccer competition when Westport United and Castlebar Celtic face off in the next round of the FAI Junior Cup.
The Super League sides have been drawn to play each other in Celtic Park in the fifth round of the cup, setting up a mouth-watering fixture for soccer enthusiasts around the county.
Castlebar Celtic are back-to-back Super League champions and are also the current holders of the Connacht Junior Cup, Calor Gas Mayo Super Cup and Westaro Cup.
The clubs have faced each other on numerous occasions over the years in what is often referred to as ‘The Mayo El Clasico’.
Ballyheane, the only other Mayo team left in the FAI Junior Cup, face an away trip to Meath side Rathoath Harps.
All three Mayo teams progressed from the fourth round of the competition with one-goal victories. Castlebar Celtic won on the road to Limerick’s Aisling Annacotty, as did Westport United during their visit to Carlow’s New Oak FC and Ballyheane during their visit to Dublin’s Ayrfield United.
Round 5 of the FAI Junior Cup is due to take place on the weekend of January 18-19 in 2025.
