Ballina Town advanced to the Calor Super Cup Final after a hard-fought win over a stubborn Glenhest Rovers, on Saturday evening.

Glenhest took the lead after a period of pressure when star forward, Conor McCarthy, got in behind the Ballina defence to finish Mark Forrestal’s pass on 23 minutes.

’Town were forced to change things when Jamie Cawley had to leave the pitch with a recurring injury. Substitute, Oisín Tighe, went at Glenhest through the middle and Ballina got into it more as the half progressed.

But Glenhest stayed compact on the narrow pitch and ’Town found it difficult to progress through the congestion. They were eventually rewarded when Dylan McKee was set up by the excellent Leon Geraghty, three minutes into first-half stoppage time.

Ballina were better in the second half and pressed Glenhest, who were generally solid with Chris Rowland in particular, standing out.

McKee added his and Ballina’s second on 74 minutes, and they might have won by more were it not for two excellent saves by Nathan Barrett.

Glenhest were limited to scraps due to the excellent performance of Chris Maughan, in particular.
