An injury-time goal saw Athlone down snatch all three points at the expense of Mayo FC this afternoon.

The teams were virtually inseparable throughout the three 30-minute periods until Shay Morgan put the ball in the Mayo net from a corner.

Moran’s winner was an almost mirror image of the game’s opening goal, which came after just four minutes when Dylan Dunne played a superb one-two with Paddy Hope before Dunne drove it into the roof of the net first-time.

Mayo were the better team for the opening third but couldn’t add to their one-goal lead.

The momentum swung slightly back in Athlone Town’s favour in the second third, with the boys from the midlands enjoying more possession but failing to cause panic in a sturdy Mayo defence.

The final third was bookended with the two winning goals, with the first coming after Adam Malone headed in a Dara Waldron corner after just 50 seconds.

Both sides had shots on goal over the next 20 minutes as a draw looked like the expected and fair result.

That was right until the final play, when Mayo’s expected point was snatched from their grasp by Shay Morgan’s winning goal.

A full report, plus reaction from the Mayo FC camp, will be carried in Tuesday's Mayo News.
