In a surprise move, Joe Kelly, the Mayo Oscar Traynor Cup manager, has turned down the chance to move into full-time coaching in the League of Ireland.
Kelly had been offered a significant role with an Airtricity Premier League side, and was expected to accept the offer. The Mayo News understands that the rationale for his decision is down to timing; based on his senior role in Mayo County Council, and the fact that he has a young family. Accepting the role would entail a lot of travel and time away from home.
Kelly is a highly-respected coach, and took the Mayo side, unexpectedly, to the Oscar Traynor Cup final in April, where they lost to Waterford. Kelly also took charge of the Connacht squad for the Inter-Provincial series which was held over a weekend in Sligo.
Mayo News sources within the FAI have indicated that Kelly may be in contention to manage the national junior team for the UEFA Regions Cup. A shortlist is to be drawn up in the coming weeks and Kelly is likely to be considered.
