Mayo man Caelan Doris has suffered a serious blow to his prospects of selection for the British and Irish Lions, and will require a shoulder operation.
Doris, originally from Lacken, was considered by many to be in with a shout of being handed the captaincy by Andy Farrell, given his status as captain and leader for both Ireland and Leinster.

However, the man who began his rugby career with Ballina RFC picked up a shoulder injury in Leinster’s 34-37 loss to Northampton on Saturday, the extent of which is not fully known at present. Now, the prospect of even making the Lions squad has been plunged into doubt.
The news comes at an inopportune time to say the least for both Doris and his Lions coach Andy Farrell, with the squad set to be announced for the test series Down Under on Thursday afternoon.
The number 8 is awaiting surgery, and ‘the full extent of the injury and implications for the summer won't be known until after the procedure,” according to his province.
Doris, aged 27, was also ruled out by Leinster for their trip to Zebre next weekend.
The Lions will get the ball rolling with a game against Argentina in the AVIVA Stadium on June 20, before heading to the southern hemisphere for their games against Australia on July 19 in Brisbane, July 26 in Melbourne, and August 2 in Sydney.
