The Rice College Westport team that came out on top against rivals St Gerald's Castlebar.
CONNACHT SCHOOLS SENIOR B BOYS LEAGUE SEMI-FINAL
St Gerald's College Castlebar 10
Rice College Westport 15
In Cloondeash
AGAIN only very little separated two strong rugby teams. The first Mayo schools derby two weeks ago was already an atrocious battle, going tit for tat. And this replay would not disappoint either. The fight for a place in the final went right down to the wire.
When Rice College secured the ruck when the clock went red and kicked the oval into touch, there was a huge roar from the players in blue and white hoops. In a physical battle, the Westport boys had done just about enough, to get away with the win.
It was the defence that carried the day for Rice College in Cloondeash. Four times during the eighty minutes, St Gerald's were ferociously banging on the door, just a few feet short of the try line. But each time the Westport wall held firm, forcing turnovers or penalties.
Both teams scored two tries. It was one conversion and a penalty for Rice College that made the difference. They march on to the final against Presentation College Athenry, on Wednesday, December 18 at 12pm.
A full match report will be carried in Tuesday's Mayo News.
