Creggs impress on Castlebar turf

A large crowd came out in force to witness a clash between two closely matched sides, but good starts in either half made the difference as Creggs got the better of Castlebar to secure their third league win of the season.

As both sides have started their league campaigns brightly, this was expected to be a close game. The men from the Roscommon/Galway border started best with greasy conditions affecting Castlebar's handling.

Fly-half, Shane Purcell got the opening try along with a follow-up from the conversion, which put Creggs into an early lead. Purcell's efforts were the only scores of the opening half as Castlebar's handling let them down on numerous occasions.

The visitors kicked on in the second half after they raised the intensity levels right from the off. Tries coming from the impressive second row, Xav Tavai and full-back Darren Gately put the visitors into a 19-0 lead. After patient build-up play, Castlebar opened their account with a try from Rory Murphy.

However, Creggs kicked on again as their lead increased with tries from Xav Tavai and substitute Sean Óg Higgins. With the momentum, the away side saw out the game well, with brave defending proving crucial.

A full match report will be carried in Tuesday's Mayo News.
