Mayo man Caelan Doris has reached a new milestone in his already illustrious career: Ireland head coach Andy Farrell has appointed the Lacken man to succeed Munster legend Peter O'Mahony in his role as captain.
Doris will first assume his new responsibility in a mouth-watering replay of the 2023 World Cup quarter-final clashing with New Zealand in Dublin on November 8. The other scheduled Autumn Internationals include matches against Argentina, Fiji and Australia, all to be played in the Aviva Stadium.
Doris was instrumental during last season, already captaining Ireland against Italy in the Six Nations and most recently leading the men in green in their last-gasp summer tour test win over South Africa last June.
The back row specialist was named captain of his province Leinster for the current season.
He will be joined in the upcoming matches by fellow Mayo man Dave Heffernan from Ballina. The hooker, who has more than 200 caps for his province Connacht, has been appointed by Andy Farrell on the back of impressive performances so far in the United Rugby Championship. Leinster's Dan Sheehan and Rónan Kelleher, as well as Ulster duo Rob Herring and Tom Stewart are either ruled out due to injury or are still in a state of recovery.
