There is delight in Mayo rugby circles this morning after Ballina’s Dave Heffernan was called up to the Ireland squad for Saturday's test against South Africa in Durban.
The hooker from Ballina, who has been capped 200 times for Connacht, comes into the squad following a knee injury to Dan Sheehan in last Saturday’s opening test.
Ireland lost out on a score of 20-27 in a game which also featured Mayo man and ex-Ballina player Caelan Doris at Number 8.
Heffernan’s call-up has been greeted with great delight by Ballina RFC president, Ed Gunning.
“We’re absolutely delighted for David. He’s an absolute inspiration to everyone here at the club and is thoroughly deserving of the call-up. To think that we have two clubmen in the Irish squad in South Africa, after he joined Caelan (Doris) is just brilliant,” Gunning stated.
The 33-year-old has been capped seven times for Ireland at senior level.
Next Saturday’s test will kick off in Durban at 4pm.
