RIP: Tributes paid to Mayo farmer in wake of recent passing

John Moran, Shessiagh, Taugheen, Mayo, RIP

John Moran, Shessiagh, Taugheen, Mayo, who died in the family home during Christmas, was widely known throughout the region and held in high regard by all who knew him.

John (82) was a native of Caherlistrane, and his wife Teresa was from Dunmore.

They moved to the Taugheen area in 1969, where they raised their large family and became central figures in the life of the local community.

The Moran family were closely associated with various community ventures over the years, including the local GAA club.

Their youngest son, Kevin, was honoured with the Young Farmer of the Year Award some years ago and now runs an extensive dairy farm in Caherlistrane.

John undertook a wide variety of jobs over the years, ranging from farming to driving lorries for Madden’s Tarmacadam, along with numerous other assignments.

He was regarded as one of the most hard-working men in the region and was renowned for his strength and dedication to every task he took on.

He had a particular affinity for modern technology and was among the first in the locality to acquire a quad. John enjoyed a challenge and was always willing to embrace new ways in farming and work.

Known for his easy rapport with people, he loved to recall stories from over the years and cherished the many friends he had across Mayo and Galway.

Spending time with family and friends was always close to his heart, and he made time for everyone.

Tributes have poured in since his passing. Patrick Burke of Clonberne recalled: “I remember John in the 1960s when he was a lorry driver collecting cream cans while I worked at Clonberne Creamery.

"On a quiet day we travelled together to Tuam Railway Station to collect those heavy manure bags. He was a fine, strong man and easy company.”

Brian and Margaret Healy of Farmhill added: “Johnny was a man who could tackle any job efficiently. Many a great chat we had when he was doing jobs for us and entertaining.”

John reposed at Donnellan’s Funeral Home, Claremorris, and his neighbour, Fr Shane Costello, was the chief celebrant at the Requiem Mass in St Michael’s Church, Taugheen. The coffin was carried from the church to Taugheen Cemetery, led by piper Sheila Duggan from Claremorris.

Predeceased by his sister Peg, John will be sadly missed by his wife Teresa and their children Joseph, Sean, Stephen, Connie, MT, Triona, Jarlath, Marguerita, Brian, Sandie and Kevin; his 30 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; his brothers Michael and Joe; his sisters Mary and Anne; daughters-in-law Irene, Emma, Dearbhaile, Leila and Samantha; sons-in-law Des Finn, JP Keane, Chris Green, Stephen Grant and Hugo Lord; as well as nephews, nieces, relatives, friends and neighbours.
