Mayo’s beaches get thumbs up


Take a peep at the Splash website (bathingwater.ie) and feel proud. Every single one of the county’s beaches has been given seal of approval for bathing by the EPA-run site.
The Splash website provides up-to-date information on designated bathing waters around Ireland. If you’re planning a trip you can log onto the website and see the bathing water results for your chosen beach during the June-to-September bathing season.
The website also gives details of Blue Flag status, current weather and tidal information, details about the compliance history of each bathing water site and aerial photographs. Everything you need to know for safe bathing.
A 2010 report by the EPA classified all Irish bathing areas as ‘good’, ‘sufficient’ or ‘poor’ depending on their compliance with EU standards.
All bathing areas in Mayo were found to have good water-quality status.  These were: Bertra, Carrowmore, Dugort, Dooega, Elly Bay, Golden Strand, Keel, Keem, Killala, Ross Beach, Old Head Beach, Silver Strand, Mullaghroe, Mulranny, Rinroe and the Harbour on Clare Island.
Great news for splashers everywhere. All we need now is a bit of sun…
