The 16km Brian Hoban Memorial Walk from Killawalla to Aughagower takes place tomorrow, Saturday
The Croagh Patrick Heritage Trail is hosting the Brian Hoban Memorial Walk in conjunction with Mayo Hillwalking Club tomorrow, Saturday, May 13.
Many will remember Brian as a champion for local history, the heritage of County Mayo and the Irish language. His weekly events, including nature and biodiversity walks, were attended by many, and his appreciation and interpretation of the Irish landscape was ever evident in his heritage presentations.
His summer history tours of Castlebar gave Brian the opportunity to talk passionately about his beloved town. Ever willing to share his time and his knowledge, he gave generously to all he met and to the numerous community organisations with whom he worked. His untimely death in May 2021, left a distinctive gap in the cultural landscape of the county.
Walkers sharing in Saturday’s memorial walk will depart from Killawalla Community Centre at 10.30am. The 16km walk leads through some of Mayo’s finest scenery and ends in the historic village of Aughagower, a place that Brian knew well.
Registration for this event is free. Guides will be available along the route. Walkers will need to make their own arrangements for return to Killawalla.
