Mayo tennis ace wins first Australian Junior Open qualifier

Eoghan Jennings has advanced to the second round of qualifiers at the Junior Australian Open

Mayo man Eoghan Jennings has advanced to the second qualifying round of the Junior Australian Open.

Last night, from 1am Irish time, the Westport teenager was victorious against Jan Sadzik from Poland in three sets.

Jennings lost the first set 0-6, the occasion probably got to him a little in the first games. But then he gradually found his feet in the second set, started to move better, with more confidence.

And the first Irish player to enter that stage since 2022 secured the second set 6-1. The third set was practically decided during the sixth game, when Jennings just about managed to secure a crucial break to make it a 4-2 lead after a long exchange.

After that he was able to serve for 5-2 and that advantage home to win the decisive third set 6-2.

"I'm really happy to have come here to Australia and to have won a match," Eoghan said after the match, speaking to The Mayo News.

Jennings will have to beat Greek player Odysseas Geladaris in the second qualifying round. The match will start at 12.30pm Irish time tonight (Wednesday, January 21).

While Eoghan entered the tournament ranked 127th in junior tennis, his first opponent Jan Sadzik was ranked 13th, while second round opponent Geladaris is ranked in 8th place.
