Connacht Cyclocross League kicks off in Mayo as local wins elite race

Round one of the Connacht Cyclocross League was held on Sunday at Hollymount by Western Lakes Cycling Club.

After a very wet and rainy week in Mayo, fear of an extremely slippery and muddy event abounded. But fortunately Mother Nature came to the rescue and provided a beautiful dry sunny day for all who attended.

On the day 80 cyclists competed across all age groups, travelling from all over the province and further afield and were supported by a large and energetic crowd.

The racing kicked off with some U-6 fun racing and worked it way through all the age groups culminating with the elite field racing in the senior A race.

As more and more riders took to the course, the rain from the previous week played its role as the course got more muddy and slippery. However, it held up well enough that the strongest riders only had to dismount for climbing the steps and jumping the boards.

The elite race was won by Trevor Costello from Islandeady Cycling Club, followed by Enda Costello and Anthony Hammond from Castlebar Cycling Club.

The club would like to thanks all volunteers who helped on the day and all racers and supporters who participated in the event.

The next round of the league will be in Islandeady on Sunday November 23.
