A truck driver has been questioned by Revenue officers following the seizure of a significant quantity of illicit beer at Rosslare Europort in Co. Wexford.

As a result of risk profiling, approximately 24,875 litres of beer with an estimated value of over €99,000 was discovered when a truck and trailer were searched.

"The illicit beer, of multiple brands, represents a potential loss to the Exchequer of more than €46,400. The consignment was discovered during the search of an accompanied trailer which had disembarked from a ferry from Dunkirk, France," said a spokesperson.

Both the trailer and alcohol were seized following last week's discovery and the driver of the load was subsequently questioned.

Separately, a man has been questioned following the seizure of more than 40,000 litres of marked mineral oil (green diesel) with an estimated retail value of over €66,200.

The illicit fuel was discovered during the search of a haulage yard in Co. Tipperary and represents a potential loss to the Exchequer of approximately €34,800.

Investigations into both seizures are ongoing and Revenue says they form part of ongoing operations targeting smuggling and shadow economy activity.

"If businesses, or members of the public, have any information regarding smuggling, they can contact Revenue in confidence on 1800 295 295," said a spokesperson.
